Nightline is a confidential listening and information service run by students for students and is run every night of the semester from 8pm to 8am. Students looking for advice or just some support can also email the service.
Volunteers are needed to answer the phones and reply to emails. All volunteers will receive training relevant to the role but you will need to have good interpersonal skills and a sensitive, non-judgemental attitude.
Nightline operates a rota system and volunteers would be asked to commit to at least three overnight shifts per semester. Volunteers will attend two full days of training (usually held over one weekend) before they start their shifts.
Volunteers are needed to help with the drop-in times in the LGBT office in the Union, providing a safe space for the LGBT community. Volunteers will receive training and be there to signpost students to different services as well as to offer support and guidance on a range of issues including sexual health, coming out, discrimination and so on.
Drop-in days and times are to be confirmed but volunteering will take place during university term time starting from September 2009. Volunteers will be asked to give around 2-5 hours a week for as long as they can manage. Volunteers from the LGBT community would be preferred but anyone with experience or an interest in LGBT issues would be welcome too.
Walksafe is a new initiative on the university campus which aims to help students stay safe while walking on the campus at night. Walksafe volunteers will maintain a presence on campus along the "Smart Route" as well as at campus entrance and exit points.
