WHAT: To work as an advocate helping disadvantaged people have a voice.
You need to be understanding, non-judgmental, a good listener and able to source information.
You will gain negotiation skills, people skills and training.
WITH: Local adults over the age of 18 who have some sort of disadvantage and need help to make their voice heard. They may be older, have a learning disability or a mental health problem.
WHERE: Based in central Scarborough (near Sainsbury’s), but could be in the client’s home if you chose to go there.
WHEN: Anytime of the week, but you need to be able to give up about 2 hours per week and commit to the project for at least 3 months. Training will be 3-4 half day sessions arranged to suit you.
WHAT: To work as a volunteer adviser dealing with issues such as debt, benefits, housing and employment issues.
You need to be non-judgemental, have good English and reasonable maths and have excellent communication skills.
You will gain full training and learn skills in negotiation and debt management. You will gain an understanding of the problems people face and be part of a team working to change social policy for the better.
WITH: Local people from all walks of life, usually adults, sometimes from vulnerable groups.
WHERE: Based in Roscoe Street in central Scarborough, near to Sainsbury’s. Some parts of the training programme are in Leeds or York (around 4 days over 4 weeks).
WHEN: Anytime to be agreed with the volunteer and the centre for a minimum of 6-8 hours per week for as long as possible! Training takes place on a Tuesday and it can take as long as 12 months to be fully trained, but it’s well worth the time and effort in terms of transferable skills and knowledge and satisfaction.
