Alex Johns "Moonface" - Club Captain 2009/10
I’m from Essex in the sunny south-east and I’m currently in my 2nd year studying Sports Science. I’ve always been quite a sporty person trying to get involved in whatever I could back home and wanted to try something new at uni. I was originally intending to join American Football and Lacrosse, but I knew one of the guys through my sister so thought I’d go and say hello and ended up joining right there and then and am now secretary/treasurer for the coming year.
Always wanting to make a good impression I missed the first fresher’s session and turned up late to the next one but the experienced guys were great and I picked it up pretty quickly once I got to know everyone a bit better and I was hooked. As soon as talk of the Sheffield beginners tournament came up I couldn’t wait and sure enough it was an awesome weekend.
The social side of hulltimate is ace as well; you can’t beat a bit of dressing up (although being a nun on Halloween was probably a mistake!). One of these fatal nights however I made the mistake of letting the guys know my nickname was moonface, having been branded by a teacher who decided my head was a little too round for his liking and the name’s stuck.
Ultimate is an amazing sport that everyone needs to try. The actual game-time is great and the social side is just as good. It’s really easy to pick up and the rest will come with experience; at the very least you’ll be fitter than Matt Walton so come down and give it a go!
