Hmm well I first got into Ultimate at 6th form. Throwing the discs about instead of attending lessons, here I learnt a few fancy as hell throws from a few buddies of mine. At the end of 6th form I was looking at playing Ultimate at university and convinced myself to sign up at freshers fair.
Was probably single handedly the best decision I made in my entire first year. Hulltimate has taken me all over the country and even into bonnie Scotland (yes that’s right we went to another country). Where we played hard but partied harder...playing your first game on a Sunday morning off your tits is fucking funny.
My first training session I was a bit over keen and turned up a good half hour early but eventually the team rambled in. I was quickly introduced to everyone else and soon realised these fancy as hell throws I had learnt in 6th form were the basics 101 of ultimate. and all my throws were weak as shit. The session ended with a walk through game scenario where you get thrown in at the deep end and just kind of follow everyone else. By the end of the game I had grasped the theory of stacking and cutting, but still didn’t know what the hell they did and why. This soon rectified a couple of weeks later and the team were…well we were beginners but getting better with the help of the experienced team.
Our first tournament at Sheffield was kick ass. With beginner teams from all over the country coming to play ultimate. We were hots for winning against boogie knights…but lets not go there. But a party to end all parties on the Saturday night saw the team wankered for the finals…ah well shit happens : ) another tournament in Edinburgh saw us rank I believe 7th out
of a fuck load of teams, I believe it was 40 odd teams so we were well chuffed with the result.
Playing ultimate in my first year at uni was wicked. Not only do we train and play harder than any other sport in the uni we socialise better than any other teams. Our social events ranged from disc-golf round the cricket pitch (“watch the car Matt…(distant thud)….WHAT DID I JUST SAY ABOUT THE CAR MATT??”), to full blown drinking sessions and guitar hero (You did'nt play GH...you drooled in the corner! - Matt W).
To some up my first year of Ultimate at university in one word it would be:
EPIC!!
