HUU Student Led Teaching Awards

22nd March 2012 9:22 am
HUU Student Led Teaching Awards.

HUU Student Led Teaching Awards.

This year, Hull University Union will be recognising members of University staff for excellent quality teaching and student support. Students will have the opportunity to recognise the significant impact that staff have had on their learning development and their overall student experience. The awards available are as follows.

• Inspiring Teaching Award.
• Innovative Teaching Award.
• Best Feedback Award.
• Best Module Award.
• Postgraduates' Choice Award.
• Best Supervisor Award.
• Admin and Support Staff Award.
• Overall Outstanding Achievement Award.

The benefits of holding the awards are numerous. Positively engaging students in learning and teaching is becoming increasingly important within the HE sector. With significantly increased student fees, there is a temptation for students to see themselves as consumers. The relationship between students and staff is - and should continue to be - a partnership with students actively engaging in a collective community of learning. These awards help to reinforce this ideology.

The awards are a positive campaign - a carrot rather than a stick approach to enhancing the quality of teaching at our institution. By identifying good practice, we can define what shapes an excellent learning experience. Disseminating this good practice across the institution will lead to a clearer understanding of student expectations, increased innovation and ultimately an enhanced quality of learning and teaching provision.

The awards are also an opportunity to shift the balance of Higher Education back to teaching. Drastic cuts have left many HE providers focusing on chasing research funding. There are very few opportunities within Universities to be promoted on the quality of teaching. By celebrating learning and teaching, HUU's awards will readdress the balance promoting high quality research led teaching.

Criteria for each of the awards can be found on our website as well as on the back of our nomination forms. If you can think of anyone that deserves one of the awards on offer, then please take a moment to recognise their efforts.

Submitting a nomination is easy. Pick up a form from HUU Reception or head online to www.hullstudent.com/education. All shortlisted nominations will receive two free tickets to the HUU Student Led Teaching Awards taking place on 1st May. The awards will include a three course meal and guest speaker former NUS President and Chief Executive of the Helena Kennedy Foundation, Wes Streeting.
