What have Course Reps achieved?

We asked our Course Reps what their biggest achievements were in Semester 1 2010-11. The comments below demonstrate some of the changes made because of Course Reps. They can only make these changes if you tell them what is up!

“I would say that people are actually listening to our concerns with the library and might think of solutions for the noise problem. As well, it feels good to be recognized as a Course Rep and that people are really open when it comes to expressing their own concerns regarding the University, their studies and ideas of improvement. It shows that we are doing a good thing.”

“My biggest success in being a course rep has been to help not just the mature students with problems but also last year to make people on my course aware that there was someone in the department they could talk to if they had any problems.”

“I feel I am achieving success by representing my year group and bringing previously unknown issues to an attentive group of staff.”

“The main success is raising awareness and being given consideration to students whose time tabling does not fit in with canteen times. Attempts are made to address this so food is accessible but with limited choice.”

“ Getting anonymity back on the cover sheets of hand-ins, for which a new supply had arrived and they allowed the signature to be seen. Discussed at Department meetings and resolved.”

“Drafted a newsletter reporting on what the happened in the meeting, which a group of us are using as a template to get ideas for a Committee newsletter (which the department has agreed to sponsor to be distributed to students to let them know what we are doing)- we hope to have a copy of that out after the next meeting”

“We've tried to think of different ways to get feedback from students- we held two drop-in sessions where students could come to us with problems in the Esk building “

What were the biggest achievements last year?

Library – Longer opening hours in term time Through raising awareness of how beneficial longer opening hours would be our Course Reps helped get longer opening hours of the BJL!

Library – Introduction of the silent 4th floor Through constantly raising awareness of the noise issues in the library, Course Reps helped get the 4th floor designated as a silent study space! It’s been a popular addition to the library and has been well received!

All the small little things that make a big difference - From fixed lighting in lecture theatres to a vending machine to cure those post-lecture munchies, Course Reps have made changes across the campus. Departments have changed lots of things from timetabling, handbooks, module content and trip availability all because of student feedback!
