Introduction to VP Education

Hi all!
My name is Matthew Barrow and I’m the Vice-President Education for Hull University Students’ Union. As VP Education I am responsible for the academic welfare, support and representation of students at the University of Hull. This involves leasing with the University on behalf of all its enrolled students, heading the Education Zone and assisting with the co-ordination of Course Representatives - including assisting departments. In addition my role involves constant consultation with the student body on educational issues locally and nationally. This is particularly important considering the economic troubles, budget cuts and approaching reviews on student finance.

As VP Education I am assisted by a lot of volunteers, namely the 400+ students who form our elected Course, Faculty and Senate Representatives. As part of my role I also work closely with the Academic Adviser in the Advice Centre as well as the Education and Representation Co-ordinator in the Education Hub. These staff members assist me with my academic welfare and student representation duties and through liaising with these staff members I am able to uncover issues affecting the student body.

One key aspect of my election campaign to become VP Education was my commitment to pressing the University to increase its provision of open-access PCs. I am now forming a year-long campaign to ensure that the University strategy and proposed library refurbishment includes an increased provision of computers. I hope I can have your support in raising awareness of this throughout the year.

My office is located on the 1st floor of the Union - If you need any help, support or advice, my door is always open. If there’s anything I can help you with or you just want to come in for a catch up, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
