What is HUSSO?
HUSSO is our student volunteering group – we have a variety of different volunteering projects that you can take part in during the academic year. The projects are all run by students and are divided into five areas. You’ll find descriptions of the projects by clicking on the relevant Area below.
Each project has a student project leader who coordinates the project and liaises with the participants and volunteers. In turn, each Area has an Area Coordinator and they are responsible for supporting the project leaders within their area. The Area Coordinators also make up the HUSSO executive committee, the steering group of HUSSO. Finally, the Chair HUSSO heads up the exec and is responsible for supporting the exec in their roles.
Could you be next year's Chair HUSSO? This is a great chance to lead HUSSO in the 2012/13 academic year and gives you the chance to be part of an 50 year tradition. You will gain and develop leadership, communication and interpersonal skills and have the chance to work with the exec to increase HUSSO's impact on the local and university communities.
Come along to the HUSSO AGM on Wednesday 1st February at 12pm in Meeting Room 5 to find out more about standing for Chair HUSSO as well as exec and project co-ordinator positions.
You can also attend the Information Meeting straight afterwards at 1.30pm in Meeting Room 1 to find out about all the roles available in the 2012 HUU Elections.
Volunteer with HUSSO!
New friends, work experience, new skills, the chance to do something a bit different– just a few of the things volunteering with HUSSO can do for you. It looks good on your CV and you’ll make a real difference to people’s lives.
If you would like to apply to take part in a project, follow one of the links below for a description of the project and download an application form. You can also pick up an application form from the Student Activities Centre (1st floor of the Union). The deadline for applications is Monday 6th February at 4pm. We are currently waiting to confirm which projects have space for volunteers this semester. These projects are currently:
Lead a Project!
Would you like to take on more responsibility? Are you organised, enthusiastic and a great team leader? Maybe you would like to take on a role as a project coordinator and be responsible for the day to day running of a project. It’s a really rewarding experience - you’ll learn a lot and it looks good on your CV too.
We’re currently looking for keen, focused individuals to take the projects forward during the next academic year. Full training will be given and you will receive support from your Area Coordinator as well as the Volunteering Coordinator and Volunteering Admin Assistant throughout the year. See the Elections 2012 section above for more information.

Run your own project!
Anyone can set up a new HUSSO project whether you are an individual, a society or a sports team – all you need is a good idea and the drive to take it forward! To get started, email the Union Volunteering Coordinator on n.alty@hull.ac.uk with your idea. You don’t have to have all the details worked out but you should try to think about the following things:
• What do you hope to achieve with your project?
• Is it an ongoing project, fixed-term or a one-off?
• How many volunteers would you need for the project to go out?
• How long would each project session last?
• How often would the project go out?
• Would you need transport?
• What kind of equipment/resources would you need?
• What costs would be involved?
The UVC will then be able to arrange a time to meet with you and discuss the idea further. The idea will then be taken to the HUSSO exec for discussion. If they decide that the project is viable, they will work with you to make sure you have access to the training, support, guidance and resources you need in order to get the project up and running.
