When it comes to getting the most out of your time here in Hull there is no better place to look than The Athletic Union (AU). It is the place where over 2000 students come to further their experience by getting involved in a variety of sporting activity.
The real beauty of the Athletic Union is that it is run by students, for students. Each individual club is run by a committee made up of its members, and along with myself I have a team of 8 Student Volunteers that make up the AU Executive Committee, that help with the annual running of the AU. It is because of this student led ethos that the AU is incredibly welcoming and friendly, no matter who you are, there will be something to cater for your needs. Not only this, but the ethos also helps create fantastic atmosphere and banter between clubs, which is evident throughout the year.
With nearly 50 different clubs, there really is something for everyone no matter what your ability, and remember - beginners are always welcome! These clubs range from your standard run of the mill Rugby, Football, Netball and Hockey, to less traditional sports such as Ultimate Frisbee, and to one of the world’s newer sports, MMA. For information on all these clubs, make sure you come down to the AU Bazaar in the Marque on Tuesday during fresher’s week, each club will be there for you to sign up, or simply just to have a chat, and find out more as to what goes on.
Competition wise, the majority of clubs compete in BUCS on a Wednesday at our excellent on campus facilities, or at one of many other institutions across the country. And those that aren’t competing on a Wednesday are constantly attending events and competitions throughout the year. Look out for when and where these are, and for the results on our new AU Fixtures and Results section of the website.
Here at Hull we pride ourselves on playing hard on the pitch, and playing just as hard of it. There is an excellent social side to the AU which is never more present than every Wednesday night, which see’s all the clubs get together for the official AU club night in Asylum, the famous ‘TOWER’. Along with this we run two annual formal events, the AU Winter Ball, and the end of season Trophy Presentation. The highlight of the social calendar however must surely be the Tour to Spain which takes place at Easter every year, something which can only be described as essential life experience! So even if you do not want to get heavily involved in the sporting side, there is plenty to get involved in even if you just want to become a social member of any of our clubs.
As a Students Union, it is our job to ensure you get the most out of your time at University, so don’t worry if you haven’t had chance to sign up during the madness of welcome week, we are here throughout the year to make it as easy as possible to get involved. Feel free to pop into my office at any time with any problems, queries or worries you may have, I’m always available to help! Aside from that I’d like to congratulate you in choosing Hull, and I promise you it is a decision you will not regret!
